His long-term projects explore how people inhabit territories shaped by desire, power, movement and economic change. Through road trips across the United States, the everyday culture surrounding surfing and an ongoing archive of violence and memory in Sinaloa, he looks for the gestures, objects and ordinary spaces where larger social structures become visible.
Rather than treating commissioned and personal work as opposing identities, Tamayo approaches them as different conditions for the same act of looking: one begins with a brief, the other with a question, but both require attention, proximity and the construction of images capable of carrying more than one reading.
